wu long tea ? oolong tea ? 2 Years ago Karma: 0
Hi there - glad to find this board. Just a quick question

I've been drinking some oolong tea that I bought in China town, and would like to find out more about it - but when I search for oolong I sometimes see wulong - is this different or are they both the same?

Thanks! :?

Hi there Big Al. Welcome to the board.

Oolong, wulong, wu long, even wu lung, are all the same tea. The different spellings have to do with the way Chinese characters are transcribed using western alphabets. Remeber when we used to call Beijing 'Peking'? The name of the city didn't change, only the system of romanization.

Thanks for that - I've often wondered if oolong and wulong are the same. So confusing :!: Why don't they just pick one spelling and be done with it.

As for Beijing - Peking - I thought that had something to do with the Red Army coming to power - memory fails though.

I see a lot of different spellings for Chinese tea and other chinese products. It's confusing - your not always sure what you are getting. There should be a "standards" committed for naming Chinese products...

OK - that helps a lot - I never considered there could be different ways to spell the same thing...
